What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is meant to treat the posture and movement mechanisms of people of all ages. Complaints mostly cover dysfunction of joints, muscles, tendons or ligaments. These complaints have usually been caused by poor execution of labor activities, sports injuries, heavy lifting, poor posture, natural aging processes, or too much tension or stress.

Common ailments are tense muscles, tendon infection or bursitis, overburdened joints, or osteoarthritis. In addition the physical therapist is also able to treat dysfunction of the nervous system (M.S.), blood vessels (stroke), lungs (COPD), heart (heart attack), and the skin (adhesions). Furthermore, people often receive rehabilitation after surgery from a physical therapist.

What is the purpose of physical therapy?

Physical therapy aims to treat or stabilize dysfunctions in the posture and movement mechanisms, to reduce the reoccurrence of injuries, or to prevent the appearance of new complaints. Not all complaints can always be fully treated. In that case the physical therapist will help you to work with your remaining limitations or complaints as best as possible. Some of the most common used methods include exercise therapy, massage therapy, movement therapy, dry needling, ARP/RSQ1 – therapy, and providing information and advice.

Physical therapy is suitable for which problems?

Physical therapists treat many problems with posture and movement mechanisms, including:

  • Pain to joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.
  • Joints edema
  • Loss of strength
  • Movement limitation
  • Stiffness of joints
  • Locomotion problems
  • Balance disruption
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Obesity
  • Fatigue or Loss of stamina due to an underlying, contributing problem
  • Posture difficulties
  • Recovery after an operation
  • Chronic conditions such as MS, Parkinson, cardiovascular conditions
